| Located at the limit of two departments, the village of Tayrac owes its name to a Roman who had a vast field and was called Tarius. As of XIIIth century, the village depended on the abbey of Saint Maurin, because of existence of a benedictine priory. Under Louis the XIIIth, the village was besieged by a seigniory. Venus of Tayrac Near the village, about 1880, , a statuette was brought out of the ruins of a Gallo-Roman building; it was made of transparent alabaster, with the white marble and red veined throat. It is only later in 1921, than one found the white marble head. This statuette represented the portrait of a Roman empress : Manlia Scantilia. We can see this refined work, going back to 1800 years, at the Museum of Agen. |
